What is Virtual Notarization?

Have you ever needed a document notarized but couldn't get to a notary? Virtual notarization (or electronic notarization) allows you to notarize documents electronically without having to physically be in the same room as the notary. Here's everything you need to know about remote notarization.

How Does Remote Notarization Work?

In order for a document to be remotely notarized, both the signer and the notary must be present electronically at the time of signing. This can be done via audio-video conference calls, webcams, or even through a mobile app. Once the document is signed, the notary will apply their official seal to the document electronically

Are Remotely Notarized Documents Valid?

Yes! In 2005, the Uniform Law Commission (ULC) created the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA) which made electronic signatures and records legally binding nationwide. As of 2019, 43 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam have enacted UETA provisions making remotely notarized documents just as valid as documents that have been notarized in person.

What Are The Benefits of Remote Notarization?

There are a few key benefits of remote notarization. First, it's more convenient than traditional in-person notarization since you don't have to physically travel to a notary. Second, it's more flexible - you can get your documents notarized at any time of day, 7 days a week. And lastly, remote notarization can save you time and money by eliminating the need to take time off work or make special arrangements to meet with a notary during business hours.

Conclusion:

If you need a document notarized but can't get to a physical location, consider virtual notarization. It's fast, convenient, and just as legally binding as an in-person transaction. Plus, with more and more states enacting UETA provisions each year, it's only going to become more widely available.
